The Idlewild Jazz Festival
The festival is held 1:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 2 on Williams Island in Idlewild, south of U.S. 10 and east of U.S. 131. For ticket and other information: http://
This one-day gem of a festival always books an eclectic mix of musicians, with a nationally touring headliner. This year's star, trombonist Robin Eubanks, takes the stage at 3 p.m.
Eubanks has won Grammys for his work with Dave Holland and Michael Brecker. He'll be fresh off a European tour with the San Francisco Jazz Collective before heading for the northern Michigan woods.
Fans of "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" are familiar with his brother, guitarist Kevin Eubanks, who leads the band and is the show's musical director. Another brother, Duane, a trumpeter, is expected to join Robin at Idlewild.
Robin's collaborations range from pop to rock, with lots of jazz in between. He has worked with such greats as Art Blakey, Elvin Jones, Sun Ra, Barbra Streisand, The Rolling Stones and Talking Heads. He fits in time to be professor of jazz trombone at The Oberlin College Conservatory.
Other acts at Idlewild are The Flat River Big Band; the Dan Cray Trio, featuring the young pianist out of Chicago; JazzWeek's artist of the year, sax player Eric Alexander; and Detroit singer Shahida Nurullah. Tickets are $40 and are available online and by phone: (313) 965-0505.
