Underground Wonder Bar celebrates the last of 19 years of live music in Chicago’s Gold Coast
IMMEDIATE RELEASE: November 9, 2008, Chicago, IL—Lonie Walker's Underground Wonder Bar, one of Chicago's last "late-great blues/jazz-joints", will celebrate 19 years of bringing live music to Chicago's Gold Coast with what may be the last anniversary spent at it's current location.
On November 9th, UWB will feature 12 hours of continuous live music with performances by Lonie Walker and her Big Bad Ass Company Band, Joe Thomas, Jen Porter, Lorna Boston, Hurricane Reggae Band, Luiz Ewerling and A Cor do Brasil, Bifunkal, Taggart Transcontinental with more artists to be announced. A "Pre-fessional Showcase" begins the evening at 4pm followed by over 20 performances from "Wonder All-Stars" past and present till 4am. Tickets are $12 at the door and proceeds from the night will benefit People’s Music School.
The People's Music School is the only tuition-free community music school of its kind in the United States. Founded in 1976 by Dr. Rita Simo, the School was set up to offer private music instruction to anyone, regardless of their financial resources. The school opened with just fifty students, and has blossomed into an institution of thirty-three teachers and nearly 500 students.
Lonie Walker's Underground Wonder Bar has been providing the finest live music by internationally known artists 365 days a year for over 19 years. This cozy niche has entertained customers from all over the globe with a "Welcome Home" attitude in a 4am atmosphere since its inception.
Unfortunately, with the loss of its lease, this Chicago landmark is on borrowed time and new construction in the neighborhood threatens to condemn its current location at 10 East Walton to the way of Maxwell Street before it sees its 20th year. With a pledge to "play till the bulldozers are at our door," Lonie Walker and her Wonder Bar will not "go gentle into that good night," but will continue providing the essential live-music experience that keeps this city on the musical map.
