EVANSTON CONCERT VENUE HOSTS SERIES FOR UP-AND-COMING JAZZ MUSICIANS
EVANSTON, IL, June 11, 2010- Beginning on July 26, 2010, The Society for the Preservation of Arts and Culture in Evanston (SPACE) will host a monthly series of concerts, entitled Generation SPACE, featuring local high school and college jazz musicians. These all-ages shows will showcase several young jazz groups, followed by a jam session featuring the participation of a seasoned Chicago professional musician. The concerts will be hosted by the Hamburger-Berkey Quintet, and curated by Glencoe pianist Jake Hamburger. For the first jam session on July 26, renowned saxophonist Eric Schneider will be the featured guest. Generation SPACE will not only feature young musicians, but will be produced, promoted, and engineered in part by high school and college students.
Today’s generation of young jazz musicians learn their art in a very different world than that of their forerunners of the 1940’s and 50’s. Beboppers discovered jazz by hanging with the “scene” in clubs and bars, but today, jazz is mostly learned in high schools and other educational institutions. The goal of Generation SPACE is to create a modern-day “scene” for these young artists, giving them an opportunity to branch out to their musical peers and experience live performance.
Musicians interested in being a featured group can contact producer Jake Hamburger and provide an electronic press kit, and those interested in participating in the jam need only to attend the concerts. Tickets can be purchased for $10 online at www.evanstonspace.com.
