“[Vandermark 5 shows] Vandermark’s full-throated, hard-edged playing – and his devotion to both the spirit of adventure and the group ideal. As strong a soloist as he is, he isn’t one to invite his bandmates to eat any dust.
He thrives on interaction …. – Lloyd Sachs, Chicago Sun-Times

“This is a band that is as comfortable with James Brown-style funk lick …as it is with atmospheric scraping and sawing, and frequently within the same song. At its best …the quintet sounds like it might just do the impossible by bridging the gap between mainstream swing and postmodern improvisation.” – James Hale, Downbeat

Vandermark 5: Special Edition will record their Green Mill performances on Friday, June 19, from 9PM until 1AM and Saturday, June 20, from 8PM until midnight, for a future album. Led by multireedist Ken Vandermark, the regular members of Vandermark 5 (Fred Lonberg-Holm on cello, saxophonist Dave Rempis, bassist Kent Kessler, and drummer Tim Daisy) will be joined by the Norwegian pianist, Håvard Wiik, and the Swedish trumpeter, Magnus Broo, both of the band Atomic. For these first-time septet performances, Vandermark will rearrange selections from the V5's last three recordings, and he, Wiik, and Broo will compose new pieces for the Special Edition project.

MacArthur Fellow saxophonist Ken Vandermark formed his quintet, the Vandermark 5, during the spring of 1996; since then he has used the ensemble as a workshop to generate new ideas about composition and improvisation; this work has led the standard album reference, the Penguin Guide To Jazz on CD, to call the group “a modern-day band for the jazz ages.”

The quintet's current members have all had years of performance experience with a wide variety of music and musicians. This, coupled with the range of instrumentation and stylistic potential held by the ensemble, allows Vandermark to compose material that runs the gamut of musical possibilities- incorporating elements of jazz history, contemporary composition, funk and rock throughout the band's forward thinking material.
