Jazz vocalist Milton Suggs, a 28-year old Chicago native with a sumptuous and memorable baritone, will perform at the Jazz Showcase Wednesday, September 7, at 8 p.m. Suggs, who is also an arranger and composer, will be joined on stage by Justin Thomas (vibes) Joshua Moshier (piano), Makaya McCraven (drums) and Nathan Brown (bass).
In addition to the Jazz Showcase, Milton has played in venues throughout the Midwest and on the East coast including the Velvet Lounge, Stetson’s restaurant in the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Chicago, Columbus park through the Jazz institute of Chicago, Andy’s Jazz Club, The Chicago Symphony Center, The Kennedy Center, Washington, D.C., and Cliff Bell’s and Baker’s Keyboard Lounge in Detroit, Michigan. Milton has shared the stage with such notable musicians as Wycliffe Gordon, Roy Hargrove, Sean Jones Vincent Gardner, Winard Harper and Wynton Marsalis. In 2009 Suggs released two CDs, “Things to Come” and “Just Like Me” with the great pianist Willie Pickens. Both CDs have received outstanding reviews from critics across the country with “Things to Come” being named one of the top 10 jazz CDs of the 2010 by music critic Charles Latimore. Suggs was also featured in Downbeat magazine in 2010.
Suggs counts among his inspirations vocal masters Oscar Brown Jr, Nat King Cole, Billy Eckstine, Johnny Hartman, Joe Williams, Eddie Jefferson and Jon Hendricks. In 2010, he was selected to participate in Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead Residency Program at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. working with jazz legends including the late Dr. Billy Taylor, Curtis Fuller and Dr. Nathan Davis and vocalist Carmen Lundy. Suggs is schedule to perform at the Kennedy Center in February 2012.
Milton received Bachelor of Arts degree from Chicago’s Columbia College and his masters degree in jazz studies from DePaul University. After graduating from DePaul, Suggs spent a year teaching music to elementary school students. Now, making music is his full-time occupation Suggs is positioned to share his unique voice and talent with the world.
