New Years Eve 2008
Battle of the Saxes with Von Freeman and Ed Petersen
Friday December 26 and 27th and New Years Eve

For a smashing end to 2008 and a hearty welcome to 2009 , the Green Mill Battle of the Saxes, pitting legend Von Freeman against the indefatigable Edward Petersen, is scheduled for New Year's Eve weekend, Friday, December 26, 9PM-1AM, Saturday, December 27, 8PM-midnight, and Wednesday, December
31, 8:30PM-12:30AM (doors open at 7PM). The Green Mill is located at 4802 N. Broadway.

An octogenarian, Von Freeman has only relatively recently garnered the full praise he deserves. Recent events, including an honorary doctorate from Northwestern University and a Chicago "Heroes" Award (National Academy of
Recording Arts & Sciences), have emphasized the influence Von has had in jazz. In the 50s, Von built an underground reputation as one of the city's most accomplished but unusual saxophonists, with a sound just as big as you'd expect from the Chicago "tenor school", but displaying a radically
different sonority. He also built a reputation as one of the
hardest-blowing tenor "battlers".

Explosive tenor saxophonist Edward Petersen commanded the Green Mill stage twice a week for over eight years, performing for devoted audiences on Monday and Friday nights. Several years ago he moved to New Orleans to
become Coordinator of Jazz Studies at the University of New Orleans. In addition to his teaching demands, Mr. Petersen has become one of the most sought after tenor saxists in New Orleans with his extraordinary range of musical beats - from original works, offbeat improvisations, Latin rhythms,
and bebop.

The Green Mill All-Stars, piano virtuoso Willie Pickens, bassist Brian Sandstrom and drummer Robert Shy will accompany Freeman and Petersen.

On New Year's Eve, the cover charge will be $25 (includes party favors and midnight Champagne toast) until midnight. A Jazz Jam Session hosted by Sabertooth saxophonist Cameron Pfiffner will follow the Battle of the Saxes until 4AM. The cover charge from midnight until 2AM will be $5.
