Legendary tenor saxophonist Von Freeman will bring his quintet to the Green Mill, 4802 N. Broadway, on Friday, October 16, from 9PM until 1AM, and on Saturday, October 17 from 8PM until midnight. Guitarist Michael Allemana, pianist Ben Paterson, bassist Matt Ferguson, and drummer Michael Raynor will join Vonski for the gig.

After a stint in New York in the mid-40s, Von returned to Chicago, where he and his brothers played in the house band at the Pershing Ballroom, backing visiting jazz greats that included Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. In the 50s, Von built an underground reputation as one of the city’s most accomplished but unusual saxophonists, with a sound just as big as you’d expect from the Chicago “tenor school”, but displaying a radically different sonority. He also built a reputation as one of the hardest-blowing tenor “battlers,” and locked horns on disc with Dexter Gordon, Willis "Gator" Jackson, Buck Hill, and Teddy Edwards.

In his 80s, Von was late in garnering the full praise he deserves. Events including a cover story in DownBeat, an honorary doctorate from Northwestern University, a Chicago “Heroes” Award (National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences), and a street being named after him, have emphasized the influence Von has had in jazz. He has presided over the south side’s New Apartment Lounge’s regular Tuesday night jam session for years, teaching young players the jazz ropes and keeping the more seasoned musicians on their toes.
