The PianoForte Foundation, Mayslake Peabody Estate and WDCB are teaming up for a new jazz series in the Western Suburbs. WDCB Jazz Salon at Mayslake, co-produced by the PianoForte Foundation will be launched with an inaugural concert on Thursday, June 19, 2008 at 7 pm at Mayslake Peabody Estate with Chicago’s Dee Alexander, jazz vocalist, and Miguel de la Cerna on piano. Starting in September 2008, this series will take place on each second Thursday of the month. The fall line-up will be announced at the June 19 concert. All of these concerts will be recorded by the PianoForte Foundation and broadcast on 90.9fm WDCB Public Radio as part of the Jazz Salon broadcast every Sunday at 6 pm. WDCB can be heard within a 50 mile radius from the station located in Glen Ellyn, Illinois but can also be streamed worldwide on the Internet at www.WDCB.org at no cost.
The idea for this series was spawned from the past success of the Jazz Salon series which the PianoForte Foundation had launched 2 years ago in its intimate space in the Fine Arts Building. The converted chapel connected to the Peabody mansion in Oak Brook seemed like a perfect place for jazz concerts with its clean acoustics and space which allows both for cabaret style seating and concert seating. The fact that the Mayslake Peabody Estate is located in WDCB’s backyard, conveniently by Route 83 and close to the Oak Brook mall was enticing for WDCB: it offers radio fans an opportunity to hear live jazz near the station and to become a more integral part of the station’s activities. Mayslake, on the other hand, is a historic treasure owned and managed by the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County, which is looking for more interaction with the general public as it undergoes a painstaking but very rewarding restoration, which ultimately should benefit DuPage constituents. The addition of the Jazz Salon series is seen as just such an opportunity to show the estate to a larger audience.
The PianoForte Foundation has grown into a major cultural engine in the city of Chicago, providing two weekly broadcasts on both WFMT 98.7 FM and 90.9 FM WDCB Public Radio, as well as over 60 concerts per year. The mission of the PianoForte Foundation is to revitalize the classical and jazz piano culture by nurturing an intimate connection between audience and artists, producing inspiring and meaningful musical experiences.
WDCB 90.9 FM is a non-commercial, educational radio station broadcasting with 5,000 watts to northeastern Illinois. WDCB is known for its eclectic music programming of jazz, folk and classical, as well as broadcasting of local news, features and useful information. The station also offers free streaming online on its website at www.WDCB.org.
Mayslake Peabody Estate, located in Oak Brook, is part of the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County. Located on the 90-acre property are 66 acres of maintained grounds with several historically significant buildings, including Mayslake Hall and the Portiuncula Chapel, which are both part of the Mayslake Peabody Estate. Mayslake Hall is an intriguing registered national historic landmark. The history of this incredible estate is a fascinating tale waiting to be told by a corps of volunteers. The estate hosts summer productions of the First Folio Shakespeare Festival, and the hall is open for public tours Wednesdays and Saturdays.
