Hyde Park Jazz Festival Celebrating 10th Anniversary

Tom Harrell, Ugonna Okegwo, Mark Turner, Adam Cruz
The Hyde Park Jazz Festival is celebrating its 10th anniversary with performances and programs on 11 stages across the neighborhood on September 24-25.
The Festival is pleased to partner with the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts in commissioning composer and alto saxophonist Miguel Zenon, who will be performing his work with Chicago’s Spektral Quartet. The 60-minute composition will be in the Logan Center’s Performance Hall on Saturday, September 24. Zenon’s new work is inspired by music from the rural areas of Puerto Rico, combining Jibaro music, Promesas, Cadenas, Rosarios Cantados and Fiestas de Cruz into a series of pieces.
Other performances include Randy Weston in a solo performance at Rockefeller Chapel, trumpeter Amir El Saffar’s Two Rivers Ensemble, saxophonist Matana Roberts at the Logan Center for the Arts and master trumpeter Tom Harrell with his TRIP ensemble on the Midway Plaisance. Chicago greats Willie Pickens, Dee Alexander, Orbert Davis and Bobby Lewis will also perform.
The Hyde Park Jazz Festival is also collaborating with the Hyde Park Art Center to invite several visual artists to create and install work on the Midway Plaisance. This project builds on the Festival’s initial intent to explore unique and architecturally significant spaces and animate them with jazz and community. Three main projects selected are “Gramaphone,” by Juan Angel Chavez, “Floating Museum,” by Jeremiah Hulsebos-Spofford and Faheem Majeed and “Mountain Variation,” by Sabina Ott.
Co-produced with the Hyde Park Jazz Society, the Festival remains free to the public through the support of the University of Chicago, corporate sponsors and individual donors. A $5 donation per person is welcomed to help sustain the Festival’s future.
