Anne & Mark Burnell Perform the Timeless Music of Julie London for Chicago Cabaret Week

If you have ever heard the breathy, unguarded opening of “Cry Me a River,” you have heard Julie London. Billboard named her the most popular female vocalist of 1955, 1956, and 1957. She released over 30 albums of pop and jazz standards, graced the covers of national magazines, appeared in Hollywood films, and became a household name as Dixie McCall on the television series Emergency! — starring alongside her husband Bobby Troup.

Today, Julie London is one of American music’s great rediscoveries waiting to happen. Generations of music lovers who have never heard her name know her sound — it has appeared in films, television soundtracks, and the playlists of people who don’t yet know who they’re listening to.

Chicago vocalist Anne Burnell, Gold Coast Award recipient, Billboard Certificate of Achievement honoree, and former President of Chicago Cabaret Professionals, brings Julie London’s songbook to life with a remarkable ensemble: music director and pianist Mark Burnell, praised by the Chicago Tribune as “silky smooth and highly polished”; guitarist Henry Johnson, who has performed with Ramsey Lewis, Joe Williams, and Donny Hathaway; bassist Chuck Webb, whose touring credits include Aretha Franklin, David Sanborn, Freddie Hubbard; and drummer Bob Rummage, a Chicago jazz fixture with credits spanning Dizzy Gillespie to Bela Fleck.
