5/21/26 - The 14-piece Super Flower Blood Moon ensemble presented an evening of original music at the Fulton Street Collective, FSC, in Chicago. The ensemble is a 14-piece Chicago band that bridges the gap between orchestral jazz and cinematic art-pop. Led by composer Joel Caracci and featuring some of Chicago’s most talented improvisers, the group combines strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion to deconstruct the boundaries between the sonic worlds of Charles Mingus, Gil Evans, Debussy, Erykah Badu, and M83. This is “Third Stream” music for the 21st century: lush, rhythmic, and sonically massive.
Trumpet Victor Garcia, trombone Michael Nearpass, bass trombone Josh Torrey, alto sax/flute/clarinet Gerald Martinez, tenor sax/flute/clarinet Artie Black, bari sax/bass/clarinet/flute Alex Blomarz, violin Katie Klocke, viola Mason Spencer, cello Kristine Kruta, guitar Tim Fitzgerald, piano Lara Driscoll, bass Crystal Rebone, drums & cymbals Matt Plaskota, vocals Alysha Monique, and conductor/composer Joel Caracci. The eveing featured live painting from visual artist John Airo.
