On February 7, 2023, Trombonist Andrew Meyer presented the arrangements of jazz standards and popular songs from the 1950s-1970s by Tom Padveen, a very young yet highly accomplished former trombonist with the Harry James Orchestra. Padveen’s arrangements are unique due to the instrumentation of five tenor trombones, two bass trombones and a rhythm section.
This music is currently not available to the public and can only be found in the hands of Padveen’s surviving friends and associates which makes this performance all the more unique. There are currently no formal recordings of any of the music either so if you missed the live performance the livestream from the evening (below) is the only way for people to enjoy these very unique arrangements.
The artists performing the music included: Andrew Meyer, Raphael Crawford, Luke Malewicz, Steve Wiest, and Catie Hickey on tenor trombones withTom Matta and Gabe Ramos on bass trombone. Kevin Fort piano, Mary Halm bass and TJ Thompson drums. Visual artist Ryan Miller created artwork in response to the music.
The show was also presented as a Live stream (see below) and virtual tips are appreciated! Here is a recap of the night set in photos by Harvey Tillis.
