BIRCH CREEK PERFORMANCE CENTER

Birch Creek is a residential summer music academy located in the heart of Door County, Wisconsin. Students (ages 13-19) flourish in the natural rural setting of the beautiful 40-acre campus, highlighted by the historic Dutton Concert Barn. Birch Creek's Jazz program offers students a unique learning experience at levels of jazz performance not found in most other jazz programs in America.
Our program gives students an effective combination of experiences to help them master the fundamentals of jazz while establishing professional attitudes by playing side-by-side with some of today's top performers and educators. The only differences between the Jazz I and Jazz II sessions are the dates and the faculty. The curriculum and performance opportunities are the same, and both sessions are under the guidance of Program Director Jeff Campbell, who is the Chair of the Jazz Studies and Contemporary Media Department at the Eastman School of Music.

GRAYSLAKE JAZZ COMBO WORKSHOP
Chapin Jazz Studio, 146 Center St, Suite #4, Grayslake, IL 60030
Since 2001 students in Northeastern Illinois have been learning to play jazz through the Grayslake Jazz Combo Workshop, or GJCW. Grayslake jazz musicians and educators Bill Chapin and Paul Nielsen began the program to provide instruction and playing opportunities for Grayslake youth and expanded the program in 2010 to include adults and students from all areas of Northeastern IL.
The workshop, open to musicians entering grade 7 through adult, organizes participants into jazz combos, complete with rhythm sections and horn players, where students advance their skills in performing and improvising over jazz tunes. Musicians who can read music and who want to advance their playing and improvisational skills are welcome to register. Past participants have played saxophone, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, flute, vibes, guitar, bass, piano, voice, and drums; but one can improvise jazz on any instrument. Each jazz combo works on three jazz standards, including swing, Latin, jazz rock, and other jazz genres, learning how to begin and end, to improvise over chord changes, and to collaborate with other musicians. The workshop culminates with three public performance opportunities.
Workshop instructors are experienced jazz improvisers and jazz educators with a passion for sharing their love of this exciting form of American music. Workshop participants come from area middle and high schools, colleges, and “schools of life” (adults). In recent years, as many as 45 students, divided into six combos have comprised the workshop rosters.
Bill Chapin—piano and bass
Tim Barclay—alto and tenor sax
Paul Nielsen—bass, guitar, piano, and alto and tenor sax
Jon Rarick—trumpet and piano
Andre Rivera—trumpet, trombone, and guitar
2021 SESSIONS & DATES:

The GJCW program consists of 5 two-hour combo sessions that meet weekly plus multiple opportunities to perform. Additionally, each student receives one 45-minute private or small-group (sectional) instructional session focused on their instrument.
When registering, students select their combo level and day/time.
