JAZZ PHOTO RECAP: Hyde Park Jazz Festival Pt 01 by Alan Frohlichstein
The 20th Annual Hyde Park Jazz Festival took place on September 26–27, 2026, across 10 locations on Chicago's South Side. Admission was free and performances spanned 10 to 11 unique indoor and outdoor stages, including the Midway Plaisance, Rockefeller Chapel, Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts, DuSable Black History Museum, and Hyde Park Bank. The milestone 20th year featured returning artists who grew up alongside the festival, such as Tomeka Reid, Nicole Mitchell, Marquis Hill, and Makaya McCraven.
The first day featured major ensemble performances, special commissions, and a late-night solo headliner, including a special solo performance by Joshua Redman at Rockefeller Chapel, the HPJF 20th Anniversary Band, the Kris Davis Headlining Trio, Emmet Cohen Presents: Miles and Coltrane at 100, and a wide array of other notable acts and anniversary commissions such as Nicole Mitchell's Black Earth SWAY, Greg Ward Octet, Alfredo Rodríguez Quintet, and the Brown Sisters’ Jazz Cafe. Additional performances and listening sessions featured artists like Bethany Pickens, Frank Russell, and Big Chief Donald Harrison Jr..
